Three types of Bristles - Three different Brushes

All have tubular brass handles, but the industrial grade bristle materials were chosen for three different tasks.

Stainless Steel For Alloy

The SS for Alloy brushes are for surface refinishing of aluminium alloy. They remove firmly baked on deposits and corrosion from alloy without leaving unsightly scratches or obliterating extremely fine detail and texture. Will reach in between fins to expose bare metal on cylinder walls and around exhaust outlets. Excellent for producing a lustrous well cared for look on cast crankcases and heads, the fine bristle tips get right into the tiny pits and depressions in the surface. The mode of action is best described as end-on agitation. See the link to the Instructions Sheet below for more information on refinishing.

Suitable for use on any type of alloy casting which is not highly polished, or anodised.

These brushes have achieved impressive ~ Street Cred ~ from respected motorcycle restoration experts and professional workshops. Even more pleasing is they have become trusted tools of DIY motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.

No other brushing tool can perform in such restricted areas and no other alloy refinishing method can be applied almost anywhere without removing parts and/or dismantling the motor.

The area to be treated can be selected with precision. The delicately patterned background of a logo can be thoroughly brushed while the smooth polished lettering is left untouched.

Unlike chemical cleaning, bead blasting or ultrasonic methods you can choose exactly where brushing is required. The effects are instantly seen so unnecessary surface agitation is avoided.

Sizes A, B and C reach right down to the cylinder walls on this motor. Size A is small enough to be angled for use on the flat finned areas. Size D at bottom is a tight fit between these fins.

SS for Alloy size D
Size D is for use on larger areas such as crankcases and cylinder heads.

During mechanical repairs they are invaluable for removing firm residue, old sealant, threadlocking material and carbon buildup from intricate shapes such as internal and external threads and splines, gear cogs, combustion chambers and exhaust ports, piston crowns.

Nylon Bristle Brushes

Nylon bristle brushes in four sizes

Four sizes with Nylon bristles.

The Nylon bristles are for removing soft deposits from alloy, and for any cleaning job where the curled up rag or toothbrush won't go. They may be used dry when dusting, or with the usual cleaning detergents and degreasers for more stubborn dried muck and roadgrime.

Concours vintage alloy can be freshened up without disturbing the patina. The Nylon bristles work well with metal polishes and waxes in liquid, cream or paste form.

With degreaser they make short work of cleaning up the rear end of regularly ridden chain driven 'bikes.

Stainless Steel For Steel or Cast Iron

NOT for use on alloy. The SS for Steel brush is for the serious restorer only and will remove old paint and rust, fillers, etc. from steel and cast iron in the tight spots missed by the welding brush and rotary power tools. Although small, this very tough bristle brush also comes in handy for big jobs, such as cleaning up welds before priming. Available in Size C only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brush/s do I need ? ?

To determine which brush/s you require note the handles sizes are in fractions of an inch just like a drill bit set. Try poking with various drill bits in places you would love to be able to clean properly.

Is there a recommended set suitable for my 'bike ? ?

A whole motor can be refinished with just a size A but the work will be slow and tedious over large areas where size D should be used, but size D won't get into the tight spots. With a complete set of the SS for Alloy brushes any motorcycle alloy refinishing job can be tackled easily.

The four Nylons allow for thorough cleaning all over your motorcycle.

Precautions and Safety Directions

DO NOT USE STEEL BRISTLE BRUSHES WITH FLAMMABLE SOLVENTS - Steel bristles produce sparks which will ignite volatile solvents or vapours.

You are advised to wear eye protection when using the brush as fine particles or solvent droplets can be propelled from the work area at high speed.

Do not use near live electrical cables or terminals. Do not use near hot engine or machinery parts.

All brushes may be boiled or autoclaved, but must be allowed to cool before use.

Not to be mounted in power drills.

Brushing Results - old alloy responds brilliantly to wire brushing. Once the alloy surfaces have been refinished with the SS for Alloy they are easy and quick to maintain in concours condition for many years simply by using the Nylons in the tight spots during a normal wash and wax.
