Allergy extracts from Stallergenes in France suddenly became unavailable in Australia in August 2015 and supplies of their various allergy treatment products soon became unavailable worldwide
Although Stallergenes initially claimed their supply problems were only temporary by the end of 2015 it became known things were much more serious. The French Health authorities had actually ordered the manufacturing plant to be shut down in August 2015 and their products were recalled
There are other allergy extract manufacturers but Stallergenes allergy products were the only ones approved for use in Australia by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
Without a supply of testing and treatment extracts it was not possible to continue my allergy practices in Melbourne and no other doctor was interested in taking over
I therefore closed my three allergy practices in Melbourne at the end of March 2016 and moved to a rural property in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales
The TGA has a Special Access Scheme where "non-approved" medical treatments can be imported. There are several ways this can be done, all of them are extremely complicated bureaucratic processes involving a great deal of paperwork, time and trouble. Also the approval of an Ethics Committee was required
Soon after arriving in New South Wales I began applying for this Special Access Scheme and in October 2016 was granted approval to become an Authorised Prescriber of allergy testing and treatment extracts made by a major international company with manufacturing plants in USA and Europe. The University of Wollongong kindly provided me with approval from their Ethics Committee
There are various conditions and restrictions which prevent me supplying my previous patients in Victoria and other States with extracts to be taken to their own GP for their injections
